Yes. Transport Canada requires most pilots to hold either a Basic or Advanced Pilot Certificate for drones between 250 g and 25 kg. Even for recreational flying, certification means you understand airspace, safety and compliance.
Basic covers uncontrolled airspace, away from bystanders. Advanced clears you to fly in controlled airspace, near people and close to aerodromes — and requires an in-person flight review with a certified reviewer on top of the written exam.
The foundational ground school is free, with no card required. Specialization tracks — remote sensing, agriculture, photo/video — are premium. Transport Canada charges its own exam fee, and flight reviews are booked and paid directly with the reviewer.
You receive a FreeDroneTraining completion certificate you can share with clients and employers. Your actual Pilot Certificate comes from Transport Canada once you pass their exam on the Drone Management Portal — our course prepares you for it.
Basic runs 1–2 weeks, Advanced 2–4 weeks, and Level 1 Complex 4–6 weeks at a typical pace. Everything is self-paced, so you can move faster or slower. Specialization tracks have no fixed schedule.
